Healthy Carbs For Weight Loss!

It seems that everyone I talk to is blaming carbs for their weight gain, and always talking about how important protein is. I know that protein has it’s place, just like fat, but I find it hard to believe that we really need as much protein as every seems to be shouting these days.

Adam and I have been our own “experiments” for the past 9 months or so. We have drastically cut back on “protein” from animals products, and don’t go overboard trying to get it from other places. And... We feel great!

I believe we need to eat healthy carbs for weight loss... Not just more protein!

We eat lots of good carbs like rice, potatoes, beans, quinoa, white rice, and sweet potatoes. And we really eat as much as we want! We love our carbs. So, I thought it would only be fair to give them a “shout out” amidst all the yells and voices for protein.

Did you know that grains have been considered the “staff of life” for most countries around the world for thousands of years? I’m sure the good lord knew what he was doing when he made them so easily grown, harvested, and stored for the people of the nations to use in the different seasons, and when animals weren’t readily available.

Here are some quick facts about whole grains, and by “whole grains” I mean that they are in their pure form, not ground up, stripped of fiber, or bleached to death...

The Journal of Nutrition says, “Greater whole grain intake is associated with lower risk of type 2 diabetes (26%), cardiovascular disease (21%), and weight gain.”

Whole grains help reduce inflammation!! Big bonus there! :)

The  American Heart Association found that each serving of whole grains is estimated to reduce CRP Concentrations by approximately 7% (CRP is the marker used to measure inflammation in the body). Meat, Eggs, and Dairy raise inflammation (by the way...)

Even whole grain breads have their place as long as you are getting “whole grains” and not the fake stuff.

More Benefits of good whole grains:

They reduce the risk of asthma, give us healthier carotid arteries, reduce inflammatory disease risks, lower the risk of colorectal cancer, create healthier blood pressure levels, are associated with less gum and tooth loss, and improve gastrointestinal health!

Whole grains give us an abundance of the fiber we need to stay regular, have healthy colons, and great poops!!! They also have a great amount of protein, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals.

On a low scale we need about 35 grams of fiber a day. Grains help us feel full, satisfied, and satiated!

Did you know white rice by itself is 8% protein.

Grains give us Vitamin B, and iron (which transports oxygen throughout the body and helps prevent anemia). Magnesium, which helps build strong bones, and selenium, which protects against oxidation. They also contain zinc, necessary to keep your immune system in fighting shape.

“In a study of almost 35,000 male health professionals aged 40 to 75, participants who consumed the highest amounts of whole grain were 23 percent less likely to get gum disease than those who stayed away from whole grains.”

Take a look for yourself! Go ahead and google benefits of whole grains and see what you find, you’ll probably even stumble upon some of the articles i quote here!
